More than 80 sixth-form students from across the OX14 Learning Partnership have been recruited for the award winning Peer Support Lead programme.

As Peer Support Leads (PSLs), these senior students will work within their respective schools to provide care and guidance for younger pupils, working closely alongside existing school pastoral systems.

Joint Training and Collaboration

To help them succeed in their new roles, the PSLs will take part in joint training sessions throughout the school year, giving them the opportunity to work together and reflect on their progress.

The first joint training session, kindly hosted by Fitzharrys,  focused on the core skills required for effective mentoring. During the sessions, students focused on several key areas:

  • Active listening and empathy: Learning how to listen to and support younger pupils effectively.

  • Creative loitering: Being a visible, welcoming, and approachable presence in social spaces around the school.

  • Safeguarding: Understanding professional boundaries and learning how to properly report student welfare concerns.

  • The role of a mentor: Building trust and establishing a supportive environment.

Developing Leadership and Communication Skills

The initial session also allowed the new cohort to get to know one another, share ideas, and discuss how to approach their new responsibilities with kindness and care.

This programme is designed to benefit both the younger pupils receiving guidance and the sixth formers themselves, who gain practical experience in leadership, communication, and teamwork. With their training now underway, this excellent group of students is well prepared to begin supporting their school communities.
